Bill of Sale
Buying a car? There's no document more important than the bill of sale. It can also be known as the purchase and sale agreement. This is the paper that essentially seals the sale process. If you're buying a car, truck, trailer, snowmobile, or even an ATV, you're going to need acceptable proof of ownership. If you don't have it, there can be difficulties when registering the vehicle or getting a title certificate.
Get the proof of ownership with the bill of sale. Both the seller and the buyer complete this document.
It includes:
- Year and make of the car
- Vehicle identification number (VIN)
- Date of sale
- Purchase price
- Names and signatures of the buyer and seller
You'll want to make a photocopy of the bill of sale to keep for your own records. The original bill of sale will be given to the DMV with other required proofs of ownership.
Other Important Vehicle Paperwork
What is that other required proof of ownership? You'll need to have the original New York State Certificate of Title. Ownership can't be transferred without the title. The title will have the signature of the buyer and seller, and also have the mileage, along with the date of sale on the paperwork.
If the used car is 10 model years old or newer, the Odometer Disclosure Statement must also be provided on the back of the title certificate. This ensures the odometer reading is accurate and properly documented.
The Damage Disclosure Statement will also be part of this paperwork, which certifies whether or not the vehicle has been wrecked, destroyed, or damaged in any way.
